Steps of Testing Your Car's Battery

Knowing how to test your car's battery is very important. It is also important to understand that change of weather conditions can cause your battery to get low. To determine if your battery is fully charged, you should measure your battery's state of charge with a voltmeter. Once you have done this, there are a few steps you should take to test your battery.

The first step is to make sure that all of your vehicle's lights and the ignition are turned off. Once you have completed the first step, you should then connect the positive voltmeter test lead to your battery's positive terminal. After you have completed that step, the negative voltmeter test lead should be connected to your battery's negative terminal.

If your battery is in good condition, it should be able to hold a charge and be above 12.4 volts reading. If your car battery is in bad condition, it will not accept or hold a charge and will not be able to produce sufficient cranking amps. It will have a reading of under 12.0 volts.
